Adeline.

Sweet Adeline.

I punch the heavy bag in front of me, and while I’m supposed to be concentrating on my workout, she’s all I’ve been able to think about since seeing her home safely last night. After going two rounds with her in the restaurant bathroom, we ordered our food to go, and went another round at the hotel after eating. Then I followed her home in my rental to make sure she arrived safely. The lights were on in her house, and I wonder what excuse she made for coming home so late. It’s nice that her parents care about her, but I have the sneaking suspicion that keeping her at home has more to do with keeping tabs on her. I can’t imagine they’d be too thrilled to find out she’d been hanging out with me. Wouldn’t the tabloids have a field day with that one? How would she react? Embarrassed? Or unapologetic? Either way, I’m sure her parents would be sure to put a stop to it and set her back on the right path, where the man on her arm wore a suit, not a pair of ripped shorts.

The thing is, I’d never, ever want to do anything to ruin her political career, but fuck, I’m crazy about her. I’ve waited years to taste her, and now that I have, I want more. But I don’t just want her in the bedroom; I want to get to know her outside of it as well. Although I suspect for her, this is just a brief affair, and somehow, when all is said and done, I’m going to have to find a way to deal with that.

Jack, my trainer steps out from behind the bag, and looks at me. “What’s on your mind?” he asks, his bushy brows furrowing.

I drop my hands, sweat running in to my eyes. “What makes you think I have anything on my mind?”

“You just about sent me, and this bag, through the wall.”

Shit. I hadn’t realized how hard I was hitting. “Sorry.”

He eyes me. The man is too astute for his own good. “Why don’t we take a break? Get out of here, and clear your head. Get yourself in the right mind frame for next week’s fight.”

“Yeah, okay,” I say. He’s right, of course. He’s always right.

I hold my gloves out and he unties them. “You make any plans yet?” he asks.

I flick the gloves off and shake my head. Next week is my last fight, and I’ve yet to decide what to do with the rest of my life. I have no family, my only friend is Bray, and I’m not sure where I want to settle, or what the next stage of my life will bring.

“Not yet,” I say.

“Seattle has been good for you.”

“What makes you say that?”

He smirks. “Hitting twice as hard.”

I laugh. “Too much caffeine in the Starbucks coffee.”

“Then you should drink more.”

“Yeah, maybe that’s the key to winning my next fight,” I say, and make my way to the change room.
